Somalia’s International Partners Urged Not to Withhold Financial Support because of Electoral Uncertainties

Dr. Abdirahman Beileh, the Minister of Finance, has urged Somalia’s international partners not to withhold financial support from the country because of electoral uncertainties.

Beileh made this request on Wednesday during the annual Somalia Economic Update, an event that also involves the World Bank.

The finance minister urged the international community not to employ a “wait-and-see-attitude” as that could be detrimental to the economy of the East African nation.

He reminded the international partners of the tremendous gains that Somalia has made economically in recent years.

Beileh told the partners that all the gains would be reversed by any negative approach from them.

The finance minister said that some international partners have already started withholding financial support to the country.

Specifically, he mentioned the African Development Bank (AfDB), World Bank, and the European Union.

A recent report from the World Bank showed that the country’s economy is likely to decline by as much as 1.5% because COVID-19, locust invasion, and floods.
