Somalia’s New Electoral Agreement Fails to Mention Elections Date

The newly signed agreement between Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States has failed to mention the exact date for the upcoming elections.

On Thursday, news broke out from Villa Somalia that the leaders of the federal and regional governments had signed a new deal.

As details of the deal emerged, it quickly became clear that it made no mention of the date when the elections should take place.

Instead, it only stated that preparation for the process should commence on November 1, 2020.

That date is quite important since the term for the current parliament ends on November 27, 2020.

Meanwhile, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term in office also ends on February 8, 2020.

Consequently, the country should elect new parliamentarians by December 2020 and vote for a new president by March 2021.

The deal is to go to the House for Representatives where lawmakers are expected to debate, approve, amend, or reject it.
