Somalia’s Opposition Leaders Contemplating Poll Withdrawal

Presidential candidates from the opposition are contemplating withdrawal from the elections scheduled for February 8, 2021.

Currently, the candidates are in Mogadishu to discuss joint approach to the upcoming presidential elections.

They have cited the decision by the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to fill electoral committees with National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officers.

Consequently, they are likely to take the next step by withdrawing from the elections in case the government refuses to cede to their demands.

The leaders are to hold a high-level consultative meeting in Mogadishu’s Jazeer Hotel.

The leaders, including ex-Presidents of Somalia, a former Prime Minister, and new candidates, have already made their concerns with next year’s elections known.
