Somalia’s Prime Minister to Appoint Special Rapporteur for SGBV Crimes

Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble plans to appoint a Special Rapporteur to investigate and combat sexual gender-based violent crimes against women and children in Somalia.

Roble made the announcement on Tuesday, September 29 from the Office of the Prime Minister in Mogadishu.

Furthermore, Roble announced plans by the Federal Government of Somalia to protect women and children around the country from sexual and violent crimes.

Lately, Somalia has witnessed an increase in deadly sexual crimes committed against women and children.

The country’s political leadership continues to drag its foot in combating what has turned into a menace.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to debate the Sexual Offences Bill 2018.

Attempts by the Lower House to amend the bill have attracted a huge backlash from Somalis in the country and members of the international community.
