Somaliland Accuses UN Representative of Interfering with the Country’s Electoral Process

Somaliland has issued a press release in which it castigates UN Representative in the country, James Swan, of interfering with the electoral process.

“Somaliland government condemns SRSG for interfering with the country’s electoral process. We consider this meddling a provocation on our sovereignty,” read part of the statement.

Furthermore, Somaliland says UN’s Swan is disrespectful towards the country’s efforts at self-governance. The country says Swan must respect its internal democracy.

In 1991, Somaliland regained its independence from Somalia. Since then, it has established a reputation for holding consecutive democratic polls to elect new political leaders.

Its one-person-one-vote electoral process has been the envy of many neighboring nations in the Horn of Africa region.

Somaliland reminded UN Representative Swan that the country’s elected leaders have developed a culture of handing over power peacefully after each electoral cycle.

It has called on its international partners to desist from actions that could disparage the East African country’s sovereignty, independence, and electoral integrity.
