Somaliland has spoken out against the decision by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to lift the arms embargo placed on Somalia years ago.
Somaliland expressed displeasure and deep concerns over the UNSC’s decision to vote overwhelmingly against extension of the arms embargo.
UNSC lifted the embargo on Friday. The embargo had been in place since 1992.
Somaliland termed the move a “significant risk to regional stability and security.”
“The unrestricted availability of weapons in Somalia poses a massive threat in the region,” read part of the statement by Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 following the civil war that broke out in the latter.
