Hargeisa, Somaliland – The Minister of Defence, Mohamed Yusuf Ali, delivered a comprehensive briefing to the Council of Ministers on Thursday, outlining three critical national priorities aimed at strengthening Somaliland’s security and institutional capacity.
The briefing, which took place at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, was held under the leadership of President Abdirahman Mohamed Irro during this week’s cabinet meeting.
Ali emphasized the importance of integrating civilian forces into the national security framework, advancing the ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts in Ceel-Afweyn, and accelerating the digital registration and modernization of Somaliland’s national armed forces.
Despite facing operational challenges, the minister commended President Irro’s firm leadership and consistent support, which he said have been pivotal in driving these initiatives forward.
He praised the political will demonstrated by the government, noting that such commitment is essential for realizing long-term stability and modernization goals.
The Ceel-Afweyn peace initiative has gained traction as a community-led reconciliation process, and the integration of civilian forces is seen as a key step toward building a more unified national security apparatus.
Meanwhile, the digitization of the military is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency across the defence sector.
The briefing underscores the government’s renewed focus on national security reform and institutional strengthening in Somaliland, aligning with broader efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.
