While briefing the cabinet in Thursday’s meeting, the Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Omar Shucayb, emphasized the vital role of livestock in Somaliland’s economy, reporting that 3,718,966 livestock, including sheep, cattle, and camels, were exported last year.
Despite this significant contribution, the minister identified critical challenges affecting the sector, including drought, diseases, and insufficient infrastructure, which hinder growth and sustainability.
He urged for immediate interventions such as improving veterinary services, enhancing market access, and adopting measures to mitigate climate-related risks to ensure the resilience and competitiveness of Somaliland’s livestock industry.
The minister was briefing this week’s cabinet meeting, which was the fourth held since President Abdirahman Irro formed his administration late last year after winning the presidential polls.
