Somaliland Government Saddened by Opposition Protests in Hargeisa

The Somaliland government has expressed sadness at the protests by opposition supporters in Hargeisa.

Supporters of opposition parties took to the streets of Hargeisa to protest displeasure at reports that the government intends to postpone the general elections.

Somaliland is scheduled to hold general elections in October-November 2022.

However, opposition parties fear that the government plans to reschedule the polls.

In a press release dated June 9, the Somaliland government called the protests “unwarranted.”

Furthermore, the government said that the protests are a contravention of the laws and regulations of the land.

The government reiterated its commitment to the ongoing dialogue.

It also urged the international community to encourage opposition parties to remain committed to the dialogue.
