The government of Somaliland has signed a peace agreement with a rebel group in the country calling itself Xaqdoon.
Xaqdoon had threatened to secede from Somaliland in recent times.
However, the meeting with government representatives addressed the concerns and grievances they had based their push for secession on.
Government representatives present at the signing ceremony were Hassan Mohamed Ali “Gafadhi” and Mohamed Kahin Ahmed.
Gafadhi is the Minister for Planning while Ahmed serves as the country’s Minister for Interior. The two leaders were present to receive the armed rebels.
Afterward, the ministers announced that the rebel group had vowed to stop their militant approach in favor of dialogue to see all their grievances addressed amicably.
Furthermore, the ministers acknowledged that the eastern parts of the country were lagging behind in development owing to the increased insecurity in the region.
They told members of the now-defunct rebel group that the government was pursuing a path of reconciliation with all warring clans to ensure that peace prevails all over the country.
