Somaliland Hails U.S. Lawmakers’ Push for Separate Travel Advisory

Hargeisa, Somaliland – The government of Somaliland has welcomed a call by U.S. Representatives John Moolenaar and Chris Smith urging the State Department to issue a separate travel advisory for Somaliland, distinct from Somalia.

In a statement, Somaliland described the move as a recognition of its three decades of peace, democratic governance, and effective security that set it apart from the wider Horn of Africa. Authorities argued that the current blanket advisory for Somalia misrepresents conditions in Somaliland and undermines opportunities for trade, investment, and international engagement.

“For over thirty years, Somaliland has safeguarded its territory and maritime domain, held competitive democratic elections, and ensured stability in a volatile region,” the government said, emphasizing that this track record deserves accurate reflection in U.S. policy.

Officials stressed that a dedicated advisory would not only encourage closer U.S.-Somaliland cooperation but also create new pathways for commerce and development while strengthening regional efforts to counter malign external influence.

Somaliland reaffirmed its commitment to advancing shared values of democracy, security, and prosperity in partnership with the United States and its allies.
