Somaliland Leader Gives Condition for Resuming Talks with Somalia

Somaliland’s President Musa Bihi Abdi has given one condition for the resumption of talks between his country and Somalia.

According to Bihi, Somalia has to stop referring to Somaliland as the “northern part” of Somalia.

He clarified that Somaliland is now a self-sufficient nation with its own systems and economy that is different from anything in Somalia.

Additionally, he asked the international community to stop channeling aid to his country through Somalia.

Bihi says that Somaliland has an international airport at Hargeisa that is capable of receiving planes, dignitaries, humanitarian assistance, and all manner of equipment.

President Bihi was speaking during his country’s celebration of the 29th Independence Anniversary.

Somaliland got its independence from British rule in 1960. However, it joined Somalia from 1960 up to 1991 when it declared self-independence after the Civil War broke out.
