Somaliland Opposition Politician Condemns Government for Violence against Protestors

A leader of one of Somaliland’s opposition parties has condemned the government for the violence meted against protestors.

Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan, the leader of the opposition National Party of Somaliland (Wadani Party), spoke out against the violence that security officers carried out in Hargeisa.

Opposition leaders and their supporters took to the streets on August 11 to protest the plans by the government to delay the elections due in November 2022.

However, the government deployed its security officers on the streets.

Clashes then ensued in the capital city between the security personnel and opposition supporters.

Reports indicate that three people died in the clashes.

Hirsi also spoke out against the decision by the Somaliland government to shut down the Internet in the whole country.

The Wadani Party leader said that many members of his party are currently behind bars.
