Somaliland Permits NEC to Regulate Energy Sector

Authorities in Somaliland have granted the National Electricity Commission (NEC) to start regulating the energy sector in the country.

Jama Mohamoud Egal, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, officially granted NEC the powers to regulate companies in the sector.

Egal handed the powers over to NEC during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the energy ministry in Hargeisa.

Several stakeholders in the industry attended the ceremony.

These included representatives from the union of electricity companies, officials from energy firms in the country, and the Chairman of the Good Governance Agency.

While addressing other stakeholders, Idris Hamud Jibril, the Chairperson of the National Electricity Board (NEB) welcomed NEC’s entry into the sector.

Ahmed Adare, the Chairperson of the Electricity Commission, congratulated the energy ministry for playing a crucial role in ensuring that the people of Somaliland get quality services.
