Somaliland’s President Muse Bihi Abdi has confirmed his intention to run in the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for November 13, 2024.
Bihi confirmed this over the weekend when he received his certificate of clearance from the Somaliland National Elections Commission (NEC).
This election is significant as it marks the end of a prolonged political standoff that delayed the polls, initially expected in 2022.
The presidential election will be held alongside elections for political parties, a first in Somaliland’s history under the new Election Law 91/2023.
Despite Somaliland’s lack of international recognition, it has made significant strides in developing a democratic system, holding previous competitive elections.
Bihi, who is seeking a second term, will face opposition from key political parties like Waddani and UCID, and the election is anticipated to be closely contested affair.
