Somaliland has rejected the outcome of the National Consultation Conference in Mogadishu that resulted in the signing of a new elections agreement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday September 21 saying that Somaliland would not be party to Somalia’s elections in 2020 and 2021.
Instead, the foreign affairs ministry stated that Somaliland has its own path to chart.
One of the issues agreed upon between Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States was to have Somaliland’s representatives elected in Mogadishu.
Instead, the foreign affairs ministry sent a letter to its international partners informing them that the upcoming polls in Somalia have nothing to do with Somaliland.
In its press release, the ministry stressed Somaliland’s sovereignty that enables it to organize and hold its own elections for local representatives, city councilors, and the president.
Somaliland has termed the edict from Mogadishu as one from an enemy preoccupied with conspiring against the nation.
