Somaliland Supreme Court Changes Compensation for Women

The Supreme Court of Somaliland has changed the compensation to be awarded to female litigants.

On January 23, the Supreme Court issued a circular that contains details of the compensation, injury, and dowry to be awarded to women in any litigation anywhere in the country.

Justice Adan Haji Ali, the Chairman of the Supreme Court, issued a circular dated January 10, 2021 on this matter.

His circular was addressed to the heads of the Courts of Appeal, Regional Courts, District Courts, and the Prosecutor General.

The Supreme Court Chairman provided new rates for murders, injuries, and dowries due to women litigants.

In Somaliland, women are often compensated based on the price of a camel.

Henceforth, the value of each camel has been set at 3.5 million Somaliland Shillings for cases involving intentional murders or injuries.

For unintentional murders and injuries, the price of a camel has been set at 2.5 million Somaliland Shillings.

Furthermore, Justice Ali’s circular sets the price of a camel for a bride’s dowry at 3.5 million Somaliland Shillings.
