Somaliland has strongly condemned the upcoming visit by Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, to Las Anod, the capital of the Sool region. Somaliland views this visit as a direct violation of its territorial sovereignty and an act that undermines ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
In an official statement, the Somaliland government described the visit as a “clear provocation” and a breach of its territorial integrity. The government emphasized that such actions fuel clan-based tensions and destabilize the area, particularly by encouraging the adoption of ancestral tribal borders, which contradict Somaliland’s established boundaries.
Furthermore, Somaliland expressed grave concerns over the potential for increased instability due to the presence of extremist groups like Al-Shabaab in Las Anod. The government warned that these groups are reportedly planning to establish a new operational base in the Sool region, posing a significant threat to regional security.
This incident adds to the ongoing tensions between Somaliland and the Federal Government of Somalia, particularly regarding the recognition and support of the SSC-Khaatumo administration based in Las Anod. Somaliland has previously condemned Somalia’s support for SSC-Khaatumo, viewing it as a threat to its sovereignty and a potential catalyst for further conflict in the region.
The international community has also expressed concern over the escalating tensions in the region. Over 20 countries and several international organizations have called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, urging all parties to refrain from actions that could further destabilize the area.
As the situation develops, the need for diplomatic engagement and dialogue between Somaliland, Somalia, and other stakeholders remains critical to ensuring peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
