Somaliland Welcomes US Decision on Troops’ Withdrawal

Somaliland has welcomed the decision by the United States to withdraw its troops from the Horn of Africa region.

Over the last two months, President Donald Trump has urged military chiefs in the US to withdraw the 700 troops stationed in Somalia.

Trump reiterated this call while campaigning for reelection in last month’s US presidential elections, which he lost to his challenger, Joe Biden.

On Friday, December 4, Trump urged his military advisors and the Department of Defense to ensure that the US withdraws majority of its forces from Somalia by early 2021.

On Saturday, December 5, a communiqué from Somaliland welcomed the decision.

In its communiqué, Somaliland said that governments in the region must take responsibility over the security of their own people.

Somaliland authorities stated that their country has remained independent and secure over the last three decades while “deterring terrorism and piracy.”
