A delegation led by Somaliland’s Minister of Education, Science, and Early Development, Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf, recently conducted a working visit to the eastern regions, specifically the districts under Saraar and Sanaag, to assess the prevailing security situation.
This visit comes in the wake of heightened tensions and recent conflicts in the area. Notably, in December 2024, the city of Erigavo in the Sanaag region witnessed significant clashes between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khaatumo militants. The confrontation resulted in a decisive victory for Somaliland military, but also led to the displacement of nearly 43,000 civilians.
The security assessment by Prof. Yusuf and his delegation underscores the government’s commitment to stabilizing the region and ensuring the safety of its inhabitants. Such initiatives are crucial for the continued development and provision of essential services, including education, in these regions.
The visit signifies a proactive approach by the Somaliland government to address security concerns and reinforce its presence in the eastern districts.
