Somaliland’s Ministry of Environment and Rural Development announced that its officials rescued five cheetah cubs from smugglers.
Abdinasir A. Hersi, the Director General at the environment ministry, confirmed the news to the country’s press.
Hersi said security forces carried out a successful operation in Haridad town that led to the capture of the cubs.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving the country’s wildlife and providing a safe haven for all endangered species.
Hersi reminded poachers that they would be prosecuted in court for their crimes.
The illegal smuggling of wildlife is a profitable trade in Somaliland. Recently, it has been quite rampant hence the decision by the government to declare an all-out war against smugglers.
The rescued cubs were transferred to the recently established Cheetah Conservation Center for medical attention and upkeep.
