Kulmiye Party, which is President Muse Bihi Abdi’s party, has announced plans to hold its national congress in October 2020.
According to insiders, the party is not expected to make major changes in its leadership structure during this year’s conference.
Nevertheless, reports indicate that the party would be ready to institute a few changes in the membership of its executive and central committees.
Furthermore, it is unclear whether President Bihi would be willing to hold on to his position as the party chairman.
The decision by President Bihi to continue either holding on to or relinquishing his chairmanship is likely to be the sole political crisis the party faces during the congress.
Mohamud Hashi Abdi, one of the party’s stalwarts, is rumored to be waiting for Bihi’s decision with bated breath.
He has never hidden his ambitions to take control of the party as the new chairman.
Assuming that he takes over as the party leader, Hashi would also be Kulmiye’s presumptive presidential candidate in case Bihi opts not to vie for a second term.
Later this month, Bihi is scheduled to meet with traditional leaders from Burao to discuss the future of the party and his plans.
