State-owned media in Somaliland have been ordered to give opposition parties equal coverage with immediate effect.
Abdinasir Omer, the Deputy Minister of Information, made this directive in a circular dated October 1, 2020.
In it, he said that opposition parties have a voice in the affairs of the country.
Consequently, they need to be accorded an opportunity to make their voices heard by all the people and voters of Somaliland.
In Somaliland, opposition parties often accuse state-owned media of ignoring them in news coverage.
Instead, the state-owned media seem to favor the ruling party, Kulmiye Party, more in their coverage.
The directive is likely to come as great news to opposition parties in Somaliland, as they prepare for elections.
