Somali’s NIEC Accused of Undermining Puntland Reconciliation Efforts in Puntland

President Saed Deni’s administration has accused the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) in Somalia of undermining reconciliation efforts in Puntland.

The accusations come in the face of the disagreement regarding the implementation of the new electoral law that President Mohamed Farmaajo recently assented to.

The Upper and Law Chambers of Somali’s parliament unanimously endorsed the disputed bill despite growing opposition and criticisms from several stakeholders.

On Sunday, the Chairwoman of NIEC, Halima Ismail, praised the Villa Somalia and Parliament for “acting speedily” to pass the new but highly controversial law.

Somalia goes into new polls in December 2020. The new law is expected to play a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the polls.

President Deni has rubbished NIEC’s support for the bill terming it “premature.” He called for “consensus” for the stability and cohesiveness of the war-torn country.
