Somalis will have an opportunity to elect their new president between February 1 and 8, 2021.
The announcement was made on Thursday October 1.
A meeting between representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States agreed on the new dates.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term is scheduled to end in February 2021.
Initially, presidential polls in the country were scheduled to take place on March 2021.
However, the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) said that it would be impossible to hold one-person-one-vote elections by March.
Nevertheless, Farmaajo and his administration, including members of the Upper House, promised to hold elections on time.
During the meeting between FGS and FMS leaders, it was agreed that everything would be ready by February 2021 to enable voters to elect Somalia’s new president.
