Somalia’s semiautonomous region of Southwest State is scheduled to announce the date for its senate elections soon.
This was evident on January 5, 2021 when the state received a visit from members of the controversial Somali Electoral Interim Team (SEIC).
Twelve members of the SEIC traveled to and arrived at Baidoa Airport on Tuesday.
Several sources confirmed to the media that the SEIC members were in Baidoa to oversee the announcement of the elections dates.
The East African nation has fallen behind in its plans to hold elections on time.
Somalia was scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in December 2020 but this now appears unlikely after extending the term of the current parliament to December 2021.
