The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has declared a state of emergency in the country over the locust invasion.
On February 3, FGS declared the state of emergency as it emerged that a fresh generation of desert locusts have invaded the country.
Farmers in Somalia have experienced devastation since locusts first invaded the country towards the end of 2019.
The invasion does not appear to be anywhere near ending any time soon.
Consequently, the government has stepped in to declare a state of emergency and set aside funds for tackling the problem effectively.
Somali National Television (STV) broadcasted a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture declaring a state of emergency because of locust infestation.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has deployed its entire fleet of anti-locust aircraft in Kenya and Somalia to fight the infestation in the two countries.
However, FAO announced that it would be forced to ground the aircraft if it does not receive funds to close the huge shortfall of over $38 million.
