Swedish Envoy Urges Somali Government to Provide Better Things to Residents of Newly Liberated Areas

In a recent media interview in Mogadishu, Swedish Ambassador to Somalia, Joachim Waern, highlighted the importance of providing “better things” in newly liberated areas to counter the influence of Al-Shabaab militants.

He emphasized that these regions have lacked government presence for many years, making it crucial for both federal and regional authorities to step in and deliver essential services and governance.

Ambassador Waern acknowledged the improving security situation in Somalia and expressed confidence that Al-Shabaab can be defeated. However, he stressed that the next steps are critical.

He urged the federal government to take decisive action, whether through engaging in talks with the militants or driving them out entirely.

This, he argued, would help solidify gains made in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ensure long-term stability in the liberated areas.

The Ambassador’s remarks underscore the need for a comprehensive approach that combines military success with governance and development to prevent the resurgence of militant influence in Somalia.
