A group of Somali lawmakers has publicly called for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s resignation, citing significant failures in national security, foreign policy, and the ongoing struggle against Al-Shabaab militants. The legislators expressed their dissatisfaction during a recent session in Mogadishu, labeling the administration as “a disgrace” due to its inability to effectively address these critical issues.
Member of Parliament Yusuf Gamadiid criticized President Mohamud for centralizing power and abolishing the system of governance across three institutions, consolidating authority under the presidency.
He stated, “Mr. President, you have failed in the leadership of the country. It would be best if you became the first African President who has failed in leadership and resigned.”
Another lawmaker, Abdimaalik Abdalla, accused the government of instigating clan conflicts and facilitating the smuggling of illegal weapons and drugs into Somalia.
He remarked, “Hassan Sheikh and his team threatened the Farmaajo government, saying the country would return to 1991. Today, I would say congratulations; you have fulfilled your promise, and you have taken the country back to 1991. From Kismayo to Somaliland, there is now an inter-clan war. They have returned the country to the dark period of 1991.”
These developments underscore a deepening political crisis in Somalia, as the federal government faces mounting criticism over its handling of security challenges and governance issues. The administration’s foreign policy has also come under fire, with lawmakers describing it as “directionless” amid recent diplomatic tensions with neighboring countries.
The situation is further complicated by ongoing political tensions between the federal government and regional states, notably Puntland and Jubbaland, which have challenged the central government’s authority and policies.
As Somalia continues to grapple with these internal challenges, the calls for President Mohamud’s resignation reflect a growing demand for accountability and effective leadership to navigate the nation through its complex political and security landscape.
