An old building in Mogadishu collapsed yesterday and killed three people who included children on Sunday night.
The incident took place in Hamar Weyne district. Eyewitnesses believe that dozens of people are trapped in the rubble of the four-story building.
Reports show that the incident occurred in a middle class part of the city.
The children killed were playing on nearby grounds when the rubble crushed them to death.
Immediately after, Governor Omar Mohamud Mohamed of Benadir region visited the scene to comfort the victims and their loved ones.
Teams of rescuers, who include local residents, are on site trying to rescue those who are trapped in the debris.
Hamar Weyne is Mogadishu’s oldest district. It is also full of old buildings constructed around 1938 or thereabouts.
In Somalia, many buildings come up without adhering to safety codes.
The incident comes barely one week after the perimeter wall at Malable refugee camp collapsed and killed four children.
