Top Somali Medical Doctor Dies in Mogadishu

A top medical doctor died in Mogadishu early on Tuesday.

The Federal Government of Somalia confirmed that Dr. Hawa Abdi Dhiblawe, an award-winning medical doctor and humanitarian, passed away in the nation’s capital yesterday.

The 73-year old has been running a private hospital while caring for the poor in Mogadishu and other parts of the country for decades.

In 2012, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Her death comes at a time when the country needs her experience and skills in the medical field to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She is the founder of a non-profit organization known as Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation (DHAF).

Dr. Abdi was one of the first female obstetricians in Somali.
