Turkey Clears Somalia’s Overdue Debt to IMF

The Turkish government has cleared an overdue debt that Somalia owed the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Turkey paid $3.5 million to the IMF.

The funds correspond with 2.4 million Special Drawing Rights (SDR).

On March 25, 2020, IMF wrote a letter to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) indicating the loss of revenue from its overdue debt.

SDR is an international reserve currency that IMF created in 1969.

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, Somalia’s Minister of Justice, expressed gratitude to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for Turkey’s continued support to Somalia.
