Authorities say that two young Somali girls are in a Mogadishu hospital fighting for their lives after they were gang raped and left to bleed to death.
The incident has been condemned around the world considering that the girls were 3 and 4 years old respectively.
According to authorities, they were picked from their Afgoye homes a few days ago. They were then gang raped in a nearby field, which is close to Afgoye Town.
Authorities said the incident took place on March 30.
The two girls are close relatives. At the time of the abduction, their families were away at a wedding. The girls were then abandoned at the field to die.
Police said the local farmers identified the girls and reported the incident to police who arrived at the scene.
The Director-General of the local Madina Hospital in Mogadishu, Dr. Mohamed Yusuf Mohamed, said his team has been providing the treatment the girls need.
Dr. Mohamed also said, “The girls are in our care. They are in very critical conditions. However, we continue to believe that they will recover soon.”
He confirmed reports that the two girls were the victims were raped by more than one person. Dr. Mohamed called the ordeal the girls went through “simply unimaginable.”
