UAE Praised for Strengthening Puntland Police as 500 Recruits Graduate

Garowe, Somalia – Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has commended the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for what he described as its “crucial role” in modernizing the state’s police force and enhancing security across the semi-autonomous region.

Speaking on Sunday at a ceremony in Garowe marking the graduation of 500 newly trained police recruits, President Deni said the UAE’s support has significantly contributed to strengthening Puntland’s defense and law enforcement capabilities.

“The UAE has stood with us in building an effective police force equipped to protect our communities,” Deni stated, noting that the training program underscores Puntland’s commitment to institutional growth and stability.

He also addressed the broader challenges facing Somalia, describing them as “complex issues of statehood intertwined with tribalism,” while assuring that Puntland remains steadfast in safeguarding its governance structures.

“Despite the difficulties Somalia continues to face, Puntland is resolute in protecting its institutions and ensuring peace and stability for its people,” he said.

The graduation adds to ongoing security sector reforms in Puntland, which has been at the forefront of Somalia’s federalism experiment since declaring itself an autonomous region in 1998. The new batch of recruits is expected to be deployed across Puntland to bolster policing, counter insecurity, and maintain law and order.

Regional analysts say the UAE’s assistance in training and equipping police units in Puntland reflects its wider security cooperation in Somalia, where state institutions continue to grapple with the threat of terrorism, inter-clan rivalries, and governance hurdles.

The Puntland administration has long positioned itself as a key player in Somalia’s stabilization process, stressing the importance of strong institutions, community trust, and international partnerships to overcome the country’s entrenched challenges.
