Uganda Joins Call for End to Arms Embargo in Somalia

Uganda has joined Ethiopia in asking the international community to lift the arms embargo on Somalia.

The calls came after a meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and President Yoweri Museveni of Somalia and Uganda respectively.

President Mohamud had traveled to Uganda to attend the country’s 60th independence day celebrations.

Afterward, he held talks with President Museveni, his Ugandan counterpart.

Last week, the Somali leader was in Ethiopia where he also held discussions on the issue with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Ethiopian Premier agreed that the three-decade-long arms embargo must be lifted.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) imposed the embargo 30 years ago.
