Uganda has announced plans to reduce the number of its troops serving in Somalia.
The country has deployed several Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Huda Abason Oleru, the Ugandan Minister of Defense in Charge of Veteran Affairs, confirmed this development on Wednesday.
The announcement followed the visit of a delegation led by Oleru to Somalia.
The delegation comprised members of Uganda’s Defense and Internal Affairs Parliamentary Committee.
Its members included Rosemary Nyakikongoro, Major (Rtd) Nathan Mugisha, and Brig. Gen. Keith Katungi.
Nyakikongoro is the Chairperson of Uganda’s Defense and Internal Affairs committee and Maj. (Rtd) Mugisha is the Deputy Ambassador to Somalia.
Brig. Gen. Kitungi is the outgoing Commander of the UPDF contingent in Somalia.
They were in Somalia to assess the challenges that UPDF troops face in Somalia.
