Ugandan Troops Destroy Two VBIEDs in Bariire Terror Plot

Bariire, Lower Shabelle In a significant counter-terrorism success, Ugandan troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), alongside Somalia’s National Armed Forces (SNAF), foiled a major terrorist attack on Monday by destroying two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) in Bariire, Lower Shabelle region.

According to military officials, the VBIEDs were intercepted and neutralized before they could reach the forward operating base (FOB), which remains a strategic site in the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab insurgents in southern Somalia. The coordinated effort prevented what could have been a deadly assault on the base and its personnel.

Eyewitnesses and local security sources reported hearing large explosions as the devices were detonated at a safe distance from the base perimeter. No casualties were reported among AUSSOM or SNAF troops.

“This attempted attack highlights the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants. But thanks to swift action and strong coordination between Ugandan forces and the SNA, the attackers were repelled, and the base remains secure,” said a military spokesperson.

Bariire has been a focal point in recent anti-insurgency operations as Somali and allied forces work to dismantle militant strongholds in the region. The thwarting of the VBIED attack comes just days after AUSSOM reported heavy militant losses in the same area, signaling increased pressure on terrorist networks.

Security analysts say the incident underscores both the threat level in Lower Shabelle and the effectiveness of joint military operations in preempting complex attacks.

AUSSOM and Somali security officials reaffirmed their commitment to continuing offensive operations in the region and enhancing local community safety as Somalia transitions toward full security responsibility.
