UK Envoy Urges Somalia to Tackle Rights Abuses Ahead of Elections

Geneva, Switzerland – The United Kingdom’s Human Rights Ambassador, Eilidh Sanders, has called on Somali authorities to take urgent action to address persistent human rights violations as the country prepares for critical political milestones.

Speaking in Geneva, Sanders voiced concern over ongoing civilian casualties linked to conflict and insecurity, as well as widespread sexual and gender-based violence. She also highlighted increasing restrictions on freedom of expression, including the detention and intimidation of journalists across the country.

Sanders stressed that meaningful progress toward peace and democratic governance cannot be achieved without a firm commitment to human rights protections. She urged the Somali government to strengthen the rule of law, ensure accountability for abuses, and expand protections for women, children, and other vulnerable groups.

With Somalia working toward a universal suffrage system after years of indirect elections, Sanders underscored the importance of guaranteeing a safe and inclusive political space. She appealed to international partners to increase support for Somalia’s National Human Rights Commission, describing it as a crucial institution for monitoring violations and safeguarding civic freedoms.

Her remarks come amid growing pressure from global rights watchdogs urging Somali authorities to end impunity and uphold constitutional liberties. Whether these calls will translate into concrete reforms remains to be seen.
