UK is Ready to Support New Somalia President, Ambassador Kariuki Tells UNSC

The United Kingdom (UK) government is ready to support the new President of Somalia.

Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, informed the UN Security Council.

In his address before the UNSC on May 23, Ambassador Kariuki said that the UK is ready to work closely with the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

President Mohamud won the presidential elections held on May 15.

He beat the then incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo after three rounds of voting.

During his address, Ambassador Kariuki urged Somali leaders to work together in the spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.

Farmaajo has already handed over power smoothly and peacefully to Mohamud.

The handing over ceremony took place at Villa Somalia on Monday.
