The United Nations has condemned the decision by the House of Representatives to extend President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term by two more years.
On April 14, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), called Farmaajo’s term extension “a threat to peace and stability.”
UNSOM stated that the extension “undermines peace and stability in not only Somalia but also the entire Horn of Africa region.”
In its view, UNSOM contends that the decision to extend Farmaajo’s term is likely to “delay the long-awaited elections in Somalia further.”
Consequently, UNSOM has urged Somali leaders to pursue the implementation of the September 17, 2020 electoral agreement.
It called the September 17 agreement “the best course of action that Somalia must take on behalf of all Somalis.”
