UN Envoy Regrets Madobe and Deni’s Absence at the Dhusamareb Talks

James Swan, the Special UN Envoy to Somalia, has expressed his “regret” at the decision by Said Abdullahi Deni and Ahmed Islam Madobe to skip the Dhusamareb talks.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has been meeting the leaders of Federal Member States in Dhusamareb to discuss Somalia’s upcoming elections.

The key issues being addressed at the meeting are election timelines and electoral model.

While addressing the UN Security Council (UNSC), Swan noted the importance of the ongoing talks in Galmudug’s administrative capital.

He expressed regret at the fact that the two leaders chose to stay away from the meeting despite determined appeals from several stakeholders.

Many of Somalia’s international partners have urged the government and all regional leaders to pursue a path of peace and consensus building to prevent the country from falling apart.
