Mogadishu, Somalia – United Nations expert Prof. Ben Saul on Tuesday called on the international community to remain steadfast in supporting Somalia, warning that the persistent threat posed by extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab and Daesh “cannot be ignored.”
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, Prof. Saul emphasized that Somalia remains at a critical juncture, and sustained international engagement is vital to ensuring peace, stability, and the protection of human rights in the country.
He also expressed deep concern over the deployment of clan militias alongside national security forces. “This trend risks undermining the professionalism and neutrality of state security institutions,” he said, stressing the urgent need for Somalia to establish a clear legal framework to guide security operations and uphold human rights standards.
Prof. Saul’s remarks come as Somalia continues to grapple with insurgent violence, political fragility, and the challenges of rebuilding national institutions. His warning highlights the importance of coordinated international support as Somalia navigates its complex security and governance landscape.
