The United Nations has promised to continue supporting Somalia’s fight against the raging locust infestation.
Etienne Peterschmitt, the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Representative in Somalia, reiterated this promise to government officials in Mogadishu today.
The Federal Government of Somalia has already declared the locust invasion a national emergency and directed several resources to deal with the problem.
However, it has been clear to observers that the country needs as much external assistance as it can get from international partners.
Moreover, the fact that the country is in the middle of the deadly COVID-19 means that its resources are stretched to the maximum.
FAO has put up several surveillance and control operations in the Horn of Africa nation to curtail the fresh wave of locust infestation.
It has increased its financial support to Somalia up to $57 million to boost the efforts the government has made through its Desert Locust 2020 Somalia Action Plan.
