UN Reports Reduced Attacks against Humanitarian Workers in Somalia

The United Nations has reported a significant reduction in attacks against humanitarian personnel in Somalia.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said this in a report that it published on September 14.

In its report covering the second quarter (Q2) of 2021, OCHA stated that no aid worker had been killed or injured in Somalia between April and June this year.

This was quite favorable when compared to the first quarter (Q1) when one humanitarian worker was reportedly killed in the East African nation.

Moreover, the UN report shows that no humanitarian worker was arrested or kidnapped during the same period either.

In the first six months of 2020, 11 humanitarian staff lost their lives because of violence meted out against them.

Additionally, the UN reported that a similar period last year saw 23 abductions, 14 detentions, and seven injuries among humanitarian personnel.
