The United Nations humanitarian agency has reported that over 3.5 million people in Somalia are exposed to acute food insecurity.
A report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said around 1 million children are likely to suffer malnourishment.
The reasons for this dire situation include the displacement brought about by the recent floods that left over 2.6 million people homeless.
Furthermore, OCHA’s research also found out that COVID-19 has forced over 1 million children out of class after the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) closed all schools in the country.
Somalia recorded the first COVID-19 case on March 16, 2020.
Since then, the country has struggled with not only the novel coronavirus but also floods and locust invasion, which have conspired to worsen the dire humanitarian crisis in Somalia.
Consequently, the combination of all those factors have exposed over 3.5 million individuals and families in the country to acute food insecurity, as per the OCHA report.
