UN Secretary General Condemns Sunday Clashes in Mogadishu

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has condemned the clashes that took place in Mogadishu on April 25.

On Sunday evening, troops loyal to President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo clashed with their colleagues who oppose his rule.

Those opposed to his rule mostly cite the recent decision by the House of Representatives to extend Farmaajo’s term in office by two years.

Farmaajo’s term expired on February 8, 2021.

On Monday, the UN honcho issued a statement condemning those clashes.

He urged political leaders in the East African nation to avoid violence.

Instead, he asked them to embrace dialogue by reviving the electoral talks that collapsed earlier this month.

In his statement, Guterres said that the recent clashes left him “deeply concerned.”
