US Warns Somalia Leaders of Visa Restrictions and Sanctions

The United States warned leaders in Somalia of visa restrictions and sanctions in light of recent clashes in Mogadishu.

On April 26, the US issued a statement condemning the fight in the capital city between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) troops.

Intense clashes were witnessed in Mogadishu on April 25.

FGS troops loyal to President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo fought their colleagues who are against his term extension.

Earlier this month, the Lower House voted to extend Farmaajo’s term by two further years.

In the statement, the US urged all parties and stakeholders in Somalia to “exercise restraint.”

It also called upon the leaders to resolve their differences amicably through dialogue.

Furthermore, the US said that it would use all “available tools” against anyone in Somalia who seeks to undermine the peace and stability of the country.

It listed some of these tools as sanctions and visa restrictions against specific leaders.
