United Kingdom to Provide Legal Aid to Vulnerable Somaliland Citizens

Horizon Institute, a UK-funded organization, will be providing legal aid to Somaliland’s most vulnerable citizens.

The organization, with the help of the government of the United Kingdom, has been assisting those who need legal representation within the country’s criminal justice system.

However, the organization’s mandate does not start and end with representing those facing the wrath of the justice system.

Instead, it also educates vulnerable communities about the country’s criminal justice system.

It offers the same services to juvenile prisoners and the internally displaced persons who lack the wherewithal to enjoy proper legal representation in court.

This year, Horizon Institute has worked closely with the UK government and officials working for the prison and justice departments to release 814 Somaliland citizens from prison.

Out of those, 173 have been released through remote assistance because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stuart Brown, who heads the British office in Hargeisa, said that the UK government would remain committed to supporting “fair and equitable” criminal justice system in Somaliland.

He also hailed the incredible work of the paralegals working for Horizon Institute in assisting prisoners and communities who need legal education and assistance.
