The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has voted unanimously to approve the new African Union (AU) mission in Somalia.
UNSC voted on this issue on March 31.
The mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) expired on Thursday, March 31.
Consequently, AU forces are to start operating in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Those who served under AMISOM would remain in the country as part of ATMIS.
According to UNSC and AU, the ATMIS personnel would operate in Somalia for the next 33 months.
The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has given itself a deadline of December 31, 2023 to assume all security-related responsibilities from ATMIS.
