The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) called for an “end to the impunity” that has seen journalists in Somalia working in torturous conditions.
Consequently, the organization has called for free press in Somalia.
The East African nation ranks as one of the most difficult places for journalists to work in the world.
In Somalia, journalists are routinely arrested, hauled to court on trumped up charges, and denied a chance to work.
UNSOM made this call on Monday, November 2, during the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
Antonio Guterres, the United Nations’ Secretary General, issued a statement saying, “Societies pay a price whenever journalists are targeted.”
He also reminded governments to protect journalists as a way of ensuring that societies remain informed and retain their ability to make “evidence-based decisions.”
